Overview
The Thimphu Tshechu is one of Bhutan’s major annual religious festivals, bringing together sacred masked dances, traditional music, colourful costumes and Bhutanese families dressed in their finest Gho and Kira. Current published 2026 festival calendars list the Thimphu Tshechu for 21–23 September 2026. Because Bhutanese festival dates follow the lunar calendar, travellers should reconfirm the dates before finalising flights.

Itinerary
Welcome to the Kingdom of Bhutan. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet your guide and driver and begin the scenic journey to Thimphu.
After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon exploring the capital. Visit Buddha Dordenma for panoramic views over Thimphu Valley and stop at the National Memorial Chorten, where you can observe local people performing prayers and circumambulations. Buddha Dordenma and the National Memorial Chorten are among the attractions listed by the Thimphu Dzongkhag Administration.
In the evening, stroll through Thimphu town and experience the atmosphere as the city prepares for the festival.Overnight: Thimphu
After an early breakfast, travel to the Tashichho Dzong area to experience the first day of the Thimphu Tshechu.
Spend the day watching colourful Cham masked dances, traditional performances and religious ceremonies. Monks and lay performers present dances with spiritual meanings connected with Bhutan’s Buddhist traditions. Thousands of Bhutanese gather for the celebration, often wearing colourful traditional dress.

Return to the festival grounds for the second day of Thimphu Tshechu.
Enjoy another series of sacred dances and cultural performances. This is also an excellent opportunity for cultural photography, including the beautiful traditional costumes worn by local families.
After leaving the festival, explore Thimphu town and visit local handicraft and textile shops. The festival provides visitors with an opportunity to experience Bhutanese spirituality, community life and living cultural traditions. Overnight: Thimphu
After breakfast, attend the final day of the Thimphu Tshechu.
Spend the morning and early afternoon enjoying the festival atmosphere, sacred performances and ceremonies. Each festival day presents different dances and symbolic performances, making it worthwhile to attend more than one day.
Later, visit Motithang Takin Preserve and enjoy a relaxed evening in Thimphu. The preserve is recognised by the Thimphu Dzongkhag Administration as one of the capital’s tourism attractions.

Following breakfast, begin the scenic journey back towards Paro. The drive passes through Bhutan’s spectacular mountain landscapes, forests, rivers and traditional settlements.
Upon arrival in Paro, explore the valley and experience aspects of traditional Bhutanese rural life.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to Paro International Airport for your onward flight.
